Game: Physical Tic-Tac-Toe

This game really is a gem.

Taking the classic pen-and-paper game Tic-Tac-Toe and adding a simple physical competition, Patrekur Johannesson (Coach of the Austrian Handball National Team) has created a warm-up game that is simple, effective, and most of all – fun.

Physical Tic-Tac-Toe

DESCRIPTION Divide the group into teams – 2 teams per game, 2+ players per team. Set up each game with a 3X3 grid using hulahoops (making a Tic-Tac-Toe board), and 3 pinnies for each team (different colours). Players go one at a time, placing a pinnie on the board. Once all the pinnies are on the board, players must move a pinnie already on the board. Teams race to complete a line, making 3-in-a-row. Play multiple games in quick succession, rotating teams if possible.
SKILL FOCUS Fundamental Movement Skills, Speed, Agility
AGE (STAGE) Ages 6+ (FUNdamentals + Learn-to-Train)
PLAYERS 4+ (per game)
EQUIPMENT 9 space markers, 6 items of different colours (per game)
VARIATION: REBOUNDING Add a 4th pinnie per team, leaving only one remaining space once all pinnies are on the board. Players box-out to earn the right to move the pinnie to win the game.
